Westside will administer our third universal screening for reading RtI (Response to Intervention) this week for 1st through 5th graders. Kindergarten students will take DIBELS next week on Monday and Tuesday.DIBELS is a quick, developmentally appropriate test that helps us make decisions pertaining to our reading instruction.
Also, starting this week students will begin to review important content related to child abuse. Our FRC has provided excellent booklets about this topic. Each class will work through these booklets in guidance class and then bring them home to review with parents. Please let me know if you have questions.
This month in guidance class we are discussing fairness and thinking win-win. Please also talk to your kids about being fair and thinking win-win at home.
Fairness – Being fair means treating others the way you want to be treated with your words and your actions, taking turns, sharing, playing by the rules and being open minded.
Habit 4 Think Win-Win – Everyone can be a success. You don’t have to put others down to get what you want. You can do nice things for others. When a conflict arises, you can help brainstorm a solution.
Westside School and the South-West Family Resource Center will be hosting a program on Monday,December 12th for grandparents and other relatives raising their grandchildren. We are looking forward to showing our appreciation to these families and hopefully lending them any support or resources they need.
Thursday at 2:00 we will be having a school wide sing along!
Friday will be Polar Express Day. All classes will have the opportunity to watch Polar Express and enjoy some hot chocolate provided by our PTO!
Trustworthiness is our character trait for October. Each class will participate in activities and discussions during the month about telling the truth, showing integrity, and being loyal. Intermediate grades will also relate trustworthiness to habit 3 (working first, then playing).

This year every student will be taking DIBELS (Dynamic Indicators of Basic Early Literacy Skills) three times throughout the year. Our first screening dates are this coming Monday and Tuesday. The screening will help us see how our students are performing and allow us the intervene earlier to help students who might be falling behind. The screening will also allow us to see how we are performing as a school. The screening will take each student around 6 to 10 minutes to complete. Students will be taking DIBELS in the library where we will have a team of staff administering the screening.
The first week of school is over and what a great week! It was so fun to see all the students! The first week was spent learning procedures and getting into the swing of things again. There are going to be some changes this year for me concerning guidance class. Westside and all elementary schools in the district are having art this year. Due to this, I have been taken out the special switches. I will still be having guidance class, but it will be once per month. The following will be the topics we will cover. As always, if you have any questions, concerns, or would like to discuss something with me, don't hesitate to give me a call at school.
September – Bullying
October – Trustworthiness
November – Respect
January – Responsibility
February – Fairness
March – Caring
April – Child Abuse Prevention Packets
Third, fourth, and fifth graders will have the opportunity to participate in a "Round-Up" on June 1st from 9:00-11:00. The round-up will consist of classes rotating between booths. Games or activities will be set up at each booth. Parent volunteers are needed and a note went home with 3rd-5th graders about this. Please send this note back with your child if you are able to help out. It will hopefully be great weather. Keep your fingers crossed!!!!
