Week of March 12th-Thursday 15th

March 9th, 2012

Hello all! I hope that this blog finds you well and enjoying the sunny weather we have had more of this week. The kids have really enjoyed the weather, we try to go out as often as possible.

Next week will be a short week again. There will be no school on Friday, March 16th. All tests will be given on that Thursday, the 15th. We will have a reading test over Henry and Mudge, math test will be over money and other review items, and a spelling test. The new spelling words and a copy of the reading story went home with the students today, Friday, March 9th. Below are the new spelling words.
how, town, down, now, brown, cow, clown, frown, crowd, growl
Bonus words: eyes, never

Report cards will go home on Monday, March 19th. All test retakes must be taken by Wednesday, March 14th.

Southside is taking up a collection of money (coins specifically) to give to tornado victims from last Friday’s tornadoes that swept through KY. If you can give, that would be wonderful.

Spring break will be Monday, April 9th-13th.

I am so proud of my students for reading so well and practicing each night. I can really tell a difference in them all, they seem excited to read and get new books. Now if I could just excite them as much for math. . .

Please contact me with all questions and concerns. We only have about 9 weeks of actual school left in this year. I will be scheduling meetings with some of you between now and then. Anyone wishing to meet with me, please contact me at school. 234-7120

February 24th- February 29th

February 27th, 2012

Hello families, I hope that you all are well. We have had so many absent in our classroom family, perhaps we are all on the mend and feeling better soon.

I am posting this blog from my home. As I’m sure your child has made you well aware, I have been absent from school since Thursday, February 23rd, and I will not be returning until Thursday, March 1st, unfortunately. My daughter and I both were sick, but sadly my daughter now has the flu. I am home taking care of her, and I am so happy to say that she is now improving overall. Her temperature is closer to normal and she is feeling better with each day. I felt it important for you to know why I am not at school. I have spoken with my sub, who is a retired 1st grade teacher of Southside, and I feel confident that your child is in wonderful hands and they are continuing to learn.

If at any time over the next few days you have any questions regarding school work, homework, or anything pertaining to the classroom, please contact the school (234-7120) and ask to speak with my sub, Mrs. Sims. I do ask that you continue working on Reading, Spelling and math. Please do not forget that the school musical is scheduled for Wednesday, February 29th, beginning at 7:00 p.m., the students are asked to arrive at 6:45 p.m. At this point I do not know whether I will be in attendance, but I will do my best.

As for grades from last week’s tests, I will try to get those back as soon as possible. I do not have them with me to grade, as I was not at school.

The children have been doing splendidly in class and excellently showing me what they have learned. As the weather warms it is sometimes difficult to keep their attention, but I do plan to allow them as much time outside as possible.

Easter is right around the corner, a party will be planned and the details will be sent home at least two weeks prior to the party.

Spring break is also coming up very soon. Monday, April 9th – Friday, April 13th, Harrison County Schools will be out for spring break.

There looks to be some warmer weather headed our way, please enjoy it as much as possible. Thank you for all of your help and support. Be sure to cheer your kids on as we continue learning 1st grade material in preparation for 2nd grade.

Christmas Party Information 2011

December 6th, 2011

Christmas Party Information

Mrs. Ware’s class will hold their Christmas party on Thursday, December 15th.  Students may wear pajamas on this day, but please remember that the pajamas must be appropriate, not night gowns for girls please.  Also, remember to wear tennis shoes to school for PE.

The day will begin with hot chocolate and doughnuts while we watch “The Polar Express”.   We will then work on crafts if time allows.  At 1:30 we will begin the actual party.  All parents and family members are welcome to attend at that time.  The students have voted to either take part in a play or a sing-a-long.  If we can work character parts out in the play, then your child will participate in either the play or the sing-a-long.  It should be very entertaining and lots of fun.

Following the play and songs, we will have food and the children may go through treats in their stockings.  We will play games if time allows.  Then clean up the room and get ready for bus call.

I am providing stockings for each child in my room.  Each child instead of a boy or girl gift, should bring enough items for each child in the room and place it in their stockings.  The items may be candy, pencils, erasers, balls, stamps, notepad, stickers, rings, lip gloss, cars, army men, etc.  Any small item that will go into stockings will be fine.  I feel that this will be less costly perhaps, and the children will have many things to look through as a surprise.  It has worked very well in the past.  You may start sending these things in next week.

Please contact me with any questions or concerns.  Thank you for all that you do.

Spelling words for this week:

bring, trunk, pink, bank, sang, wing, rink, blank, rang, sunk, every, sure

Week of November 28th – December 2nd

November 28th, 2011

I hope everyone had a wonderful and restful Thanksgiving holiday.  It is always nice to be home with family for short breaks over the holidays.  The children returned today full of energy and raring to go.  I'm sure that they will become tired early this week though, due to being off and out of routine last week.  Please be sure they get a good full night of rest each night and a healthy breakfast each morning.

We will have a spelling test on Friday, the words are below.  We also will continue working on reading comprehension and fluency this week, as well as story elements (characters, setting, main idea, etc.).  In math we will be reviewing everything from time to the hour and half hour, addition, subtraction, greater than/less than, number words, place value (ones, tens, hundreds), number word problems, etc.

Spelling list:  my, by, try, any, body, fly, cry, lucky, silly, puppy, things, always

I will be sending homework home almost every single day.  Normally it will be a two-sided worksheet with spelling practice on one side and math on the other.  Please read every single night also, it is so important.  Read other things too, not just the reading story.

There will be no school on Monday, December 5th for students.

Every Friday is share day.

Last day of school is Friday, December 16th, which will only be a half day.

Christmas party will be on Thursday, December 15th.  More information to come.

I have a treasure chest that I am trying to keep supplied with candy and trinkets.  If you ever have any trinkets to get rid of, I will gladly accept them for our treasure chest.

We will be in need of snacks by the end of the week.  We also may need kleenex.

Call or write me with questions or concerns.

Week of November 7th-11th, 2011

November 7th, 2011

Good day to all!  Thank you to everyone who went to the zoo with us on Friday, and to those who offered other support and help on the field trips.  There will be other field trips this year, more information will be sent home as the dates approach.

Today, Monday, November 7th, we have discussed our zoo trip and the animals we saw and what we learned about each one.  We have read information from the web on a few animals, had a read-aloud about the zoo, and wrote about our favorite parts.  If time allows we will be crafting one animal before the end of the day.

Tomorrow, Tuesday, November 8th, there will be no school.  This is election day.

Regular lessons begin back on Wednesday.  There will be a spelling test on Friday:

huge, June, rule, tube, use, cube, cute, flute, rude, mule, water, under

Friday is also Veteran's Day, we will have a guest speaker that morning.

Saturday, November 12th is our Fall Festival.  Car show from 2-5, the Festival begins at 4 and ends at 8.  Please come out to enjoy the festivities and support our school.  So many people work very hard to put the Festival together for us, and so many good things come to our school due to the proceedings made from the festival.

Read, read, read.  Practice addition, and handwriting.

Call or email with questions or concerns.

Week of November 1st. . .

October 31st, 2011

Hello families, I hope that you are all well and preparing for the fast approaching holidays.  The next couple of months will be hectic, yet exciting for all.

We finally were able to attend the pumpkin patch today.  It was great!  The weather was wonderful, the kids had a blast, and it was a nice break from being in the classroom for all of us.  Each child in attendance received a pumpkin to take home.  A big thank you to all of the parents who attended and helped, and to the FFA for allowing us to participate in their farm experience.

Tomorrow, Tuesday, November 1st, is the last day to turn in any Disney items you may like to donate for our Fall Festival basket.  It really is a wonderful cause, the festival always raises so much money for our school.  PTO works hard every year to make this possible, and ask each classroom to actually do very little.  Please send in something if you can, or volunteer to work our booth the night of the festival.

Friday is the zoo trip to Louisville.  I encourage as many parents as possible to attend.  It only cost $11 per person, and you must pay in cash at the gates when we pay as a group.  This is to ensure you also receive the discount.  I hope it will be a wonderful day.

There will be no spelling test this week.  We are concentrating on Reading comprehension, and preparing for the common assessment in math.  On Thursday the students will assess in these two areas.

Many dates to remember:  No school on Tuesday, November 8th;  Book Fair on Nov. 7th-11th;  Veteran's Day on Nov. 11th;  Fall Festival on Nov. 12th;  Midterms go home on Nov. 16th;  Picture retakes on Nov. 21st; Thanksgiving break is Nov. 23rd-25th.

As always, call me with any questions or concerns.

October 25th, 2011

Bye

Good evening to all of my 1st grade families!  I apologize for not updating this much sooner, however I have had many technical issues.  All remedied now, let's get down to business. . .

I will post weekly to keep you updated on events, spelling words, lessons we are presently covering, etc.  This is an easy way for parents to check in if it is difficult for them to talk to students nightly, or call the teacher, or as opposed to keeping up with letters that are sent home in folders.  As always though, please contact me with any questions or concerns regarding your child or the events of our classroom.

This is information for the week of October 24th-28th.

Spelling:  home, hope, rose, woke, those, bone, hose, joke, rode, stone, all of which have a silent "e" at the end and a long "o" in the middle.  It is great to always remind your child of this rule and ask if they can come up with other words that may follow this rule.  There are two bonus words, there and together.  We work with spelling words daily at school, please practice at home as well.  One such way is to ask students to use the words in sentences, or to look their meanings up in a dictionary.

Reading:  All students are on different reading stories depending on their levels.  It is still imperative to study difficult words from their stories nightly, as well as read the story at lease twice.  Allow the child to place post-it notes in various places around the house with the word/words they are having trouble with on the notes.  The more they see the word, the sooner they will remember how to pronounce the word.

Each student has a Reading Homework Folder with either the Dolch word list, or short stories to practice word recognition and fluency.  I cannot express how important this folder is to study.  It has really helped so many children become better readers in the past.  They also receive a treat when they can pass any section with me or my assistant at school.

I normally give a weekly Reading test on Friday of each week.  This does not determine how well they are reading, but instead how well they comprehend the story that I cover with them as a whole class.  This has gone very well so far.  It will become even more important in the future for them to understand the sequence, setting, characters, main idea, and all of the other story elements.  Along with this, they must understand word meanings.  Encourage children to use a dictionary to look up words they may come upon that they do not understand.  Be creative in helping your child learn new words, read fluently, and to enjoy reading.  And it is still ok to read to your child. . . I enjoy when other people read interesting stories out loud also.Smile

Math: With math we just continue practice of everything they have learned up to this point, adding new material slowly.  When kids do not practice math, they tend to forget the correct ways in which to do math.  The following are things to always practice, and it is great when you can make it real-world and fun for them.

Time to the hour and half hour, 3-D and plane shapes (sphere/circle), addition, counting to 120 by 1s, 5s, and 10s, writing to 120, and knowing place value of one's and ten's place.

Writing:  I have some students who have trouble writing neatly.  If you are a parent of a student who does not write legibly, please work on this at home also.  I never mind sending practice sheets home if you request them.  Or you may have a child who is still struggling to put a complete sentence together (at this point I am wanting it to make sense, have a complete subject and predicate, and contain a noun and verb, capital letter at the beginning and punctuation at the end; ex.  The dog ran down the hill.).  Write a short story at home with your child and then they can share it with the class.  There are many fun ways to practice at home.

Please do not feel that I expect you to do all of the things I have mentioned.  I basically just wanted each parent to have some examples or ideas of ways they may help their child at home in each of the different areas.

Wednesday is our Pumpkin Patch field trip.  If it should rain, we will reschedule for Monday or Tuesday of next week.  We will leave school at noon on Wednesday, returning around 2:30.  Please wear long pants, tennis shoes or boots, warm coat, hood and gloves.  I do not thing it is suppose to be very warm, so let's be prepared.

Friday is our scheduled Halloween party.  It will begin with a sing-a-long in the room at 1:30.  Our class had the opportunity to vote on either a sing-a-long or to perform a play. . . they chose the sing-a-long.  I honestly feel they chose the sing-a-long so they could all act the songs out together as opposed to speaking alone, and they wanted to wear their "own" costumes.  Children should bring their costumes that day and change here at school.  They really have enjoyed practicing, and that's what matters.  I know we will enjoy Friday.  All family is welcome to attend, we plan to have face painting, snacks and drinks, dancing, and more fun.

The trip to the zoo is on Friday, November 4th.  We will leave that morning at 8:30, and return that afternoon prior to bus call.  Please turn in all permission slips and money if you have not already.  If you plan to attend the zoo with your child, you must have cash and pay at the same time we turn our money in to the zoo upon arrival to receive the discount.  Adults pay the same as children, $11.  It could also be cold that day, so please pat attention to the weather forecast and dress appropriately.  I would appreciate a quick note or email telling me if you plan to attend with your child or not.

I think that about covers the important information I have.  Thank you for your patience and support with your child.  Have a wonderful week!

Mrs. Ware
