October 17th, 2011

Welcome Back!!  I hope everyone enjoyed Fall Break!!  The students shared some excellent accounts of the adventures they had while on Fall Break.  Several had trips, birthday parties to attend, sleepovers, etc.  Now we are refreshed and ready to get back to work!!

Please keep in mind some upcoming events:  Picture Day – Friday, Oct. 21; Parent-Teacher conferences – Thursday, Oct. 20 (4-6 p.m.); Teacher Work Day (no school for students) – Monday, Oct. 24; Fall Harvest Day for 2nd grade – Friday, Oct. 28; Halloween Party – Monday, Oct. 31

Homework for tonight:  Reading – Reader's choice and decodable reader, Spelling – 2 times each, Math – 1 sheet

Thank you for your help with Camp Read A Lot!!!  The students had a great time!  We appreciate the donations of supplies and time.  Thanks again!  

The first 9 weeks is coming to an end.  Report cards will go out soon after Fall Break.

We want to thank Mrs. Mickey Raymond for coming to school and presenting us with another of her fabulous stories.  She can weave a story and captivate the students in a way like no other.  She will be visiting our building once a month.  Thanks again Mrs. Raymond.

We are working on the story; Exploring Space With An Astronaut.  We have read it twice as our take-home story.  We will have a selection test on Thursday to see how well the students have comprehended the material.  The reading skills we have been focusing on for this selection are identifying the Main Idea and details.

Since we will be at the Star Theater at Morehead Univ. on Friday our spelling test for this week will be on Thursday also.  Please study with your child.  The students who study are much better prepared!  Thanks for your assistance.

Hope you had a fantastic weekend and are ready to roll!!  Today we had DIBELS testing which is a reading assessment that measures phonemic awareness, fluency and comprehension.  Our students did well.  I will share the results at parent-teacher conferences or sooner if you wish.  Tonight's homework includes:

Reading- Leveled reader, Spelling – 2 times each, Math – 1 sheet

Spelling Words:  Generalization:  When a word has a consonant-vowel-consonant-silent e pattern, the vowel usually stands for its long sound.  

Regular words:  tune, page, nose, space, size, fine, mice, late, cube, blaze, home, vote 

Challenge words:  erase, spice, confuse

We are rolling now!  Tomorrow we will take our first reading selection test.  It will be over the story; Iris and Walter.   Also, please work with the spelling words as our test will  be Friday.  

The spelling concept for the week is short vowels.  The words are:

drum, rock, list, desk, job, sad, chop, sack, tag, rib, mess, dust

Challenge wordspocket, lettuce, engine (the challenge words are scored as bonus points, they cannot hurt the student's score)
