It has been another beautiful day!
We are moving onto weather for the next few weeks. Children need to watch the weather each night. Channel 18 has the news several times a day, 4:00, 5:00, 5:30, 6:00 and 7:00 after school. They could also watch in the mornings before school. The weather channel is always available and weather can be viewed on the web too, of course. They only need to watch. We will be recording information during class.
Mon.-review, weather alphabet, no homework
Tues.-water cycle review, OR for homework
Wed.-fronts, OR for homework if it needed to be done over
Thurs.-stations, study for quiz, new words: cold front, warm front, air mass
Fri.- vocab quiz, no homework
Mrs. Hunt is still working on fractions and will be for awhile in Math. Mrs. Murdock is spending quite a bit of time in each class on grammar, specifically prefixes. We will finish up regions of Kentucky soon. Our enrichment classes will continue as usual this week.
Make sure your child is dressed appropriately. It is hard to know these days but it’s better to be safe than sorry. They have plenty of room in their lockers to store their coats.
Have a great week. Get outside and play!!!

Well, we really had some adventure in the classroom on Thursday. The earthquake table didn't destroy as many buildings as I expected. Many of them held up surprisingly well. We wrote a reflective piece the next day describing what changes would have made the buildings stronger. One of the pieces will be in the Cynthiana Democrat soon. There will be some pictures too. I'm going to do my best to represent as many of the kids as possible. I'll let you know when I know when it will happen.
Mon.-finish writing piece
Tues.-renewable/nonrenewable resources, the children who need extra practice on OR's will have homework
Wed.-renewable/nonrenewable resources, all children have OR's for homework
Thurs.-Common Assessment, stations, no homework
Fri.-states of matter, no homework
Mrs. Hunt continues to work on division while Mrs. Murdock works on specific reading genres. We did the bluegrass region in Social Studies this week.

I helped Jessica move back in to UK last week and I just don't know what to do with myself. I seem to be making lots of cookies these days. I brought some to school today for the kids. Of course, I enjoyed sleeping in on the snow day but I really want to be at school with my kids. The 4-day weekend gave me time to catch up on house work so all is well. I hope you enjoyed the chance to sleep in like I did.
Because of the snow day, I have had to adjust the due date on our building project in Science. The projects will now be due on the 19th. The children have made changes already. Many have switched from one adhesive to another. Many have changed plans completely and started over. I hope I don't have crying to contend with when their buildings do not survive the earthquake.
Tues.-vocab quiz; new words: fault, earthquake; no homework
Wed.-continue building project, constructed response for homework
Thurs.-test buildings, some children will do the homework over if it is not acceptable
Fri.-the economics of science (Which buildings were most cost-effective?), argumentative paragraph
We are covering the regions of Kentucky in Social Studies and will be for some time. We finished the eastern coalfield region today. The discussion includes cities, rivers, landforms, landmarks, and products of each region so it takes quite a bit of time. Mrs. Hunt is still working with division in Math class, so work on those math facts!!! Mrs. Murdock's Reading class wrote their own folk tales today with illustrations. They will be rewriting and making changes this week.
Have a super week!

What a beautiful weekend!!! I hope everyone had a chance to be outside. My daughter and I walked the dogs on Saturday. It was so good to be out! I take her back to UK today. I'm really going to miss her.
We will be finished talking about the solid structures of the earth this week and move on to liquids next week. We are starting an engineering project on Wednesday so look for information coming home. The entire project should be completed at school but if they are not finished by Friday, they can work on it during the weekend. This is a group project so they may need transportation. Again, they will have plenty of time in class to complete the project.
Mon.-cause and effect flip book, no homework unless they did not finish in class
Tues.-earthquakes, constructed response for homework
Wed.-earthquake stations (one station will be the project proposal), study for quiz tomorrow, new words: earthquake, fault They should also study their cause and effect chart.
Thurs.-review, vocab quiz, project work (I will meet with each group)
Fri.-project work
The Jackson Purchase will be added to Kentucky during Social Studies this week. We will then begin to talk about the other Kentucky regions. Mrs. Hunt has begun division in Math class. Keep working on their multiplication facts. If they can't multiply, they can't divide so keep practicing. Quiz your child while you're riding in the car. If they want some chips, make them say what 6 x 7 is, etc. Mrs. Murdock is spending another week on tall tales in Reading.
Please check the agenda each afternoon when your child comes home. You should have a daily routine by now. Snow days and the extra push we give the kids during the second semester make checking the agenda absolutely necessary!
Thanks for sending back the report card envelopes so quickly. Remember to make sure your child is dressed appropriately. If it 32 degrees or above we WILL go out.
Have another great week!!!

It was so good to see my kids this morning. They had so many stories to tell! The snow came down during our switches so we had to spend a little time in each group talking about snow. Wasn't it a beautiful day to start the new school year.
We are continuing with the earth sciences.
Mon.-review of weathering and erosion, stations, no homework
Tues.-volcanoes, bad consequences, Constructed response for homework on weathering and erosion
Wed.-volcanoes, good consequences, study for vocab quiz as homework (new words: weathering erosion, volcano, magma, lava)
Thurs.-Vocab test, Science RTI and extension activities , no homework
Fri.-Cause and effect, no homework
In Social Studies this week, we are watching our state grow as Lewis and Clark adventure past the Mississippi River. Mrs. Murdock is working on specific genres (fables, fairy tales, etc) of literature this week. Mrs. Hunt spent the day reviewing but will start the next math unit with the children tomorrow.
We WILL go outside if it is above freezing so make sure your child has gloves, hats, etc, for outside. Several kids came to school today without socks. I know how crazy the mornings can become so remind them to put on socks each day now that the temperatures are beginning to drop.
Have a peaceful week!

Happy Holidays!!!
It's hard to believe that 1/2 of the year is gone already. I have such a great group of children. It makes me sad to think that so much time has already passed.
This is a busy week. Wednesday is our Christmas yard sale. Send in items for grown-ups too. The children like to buy gifts for all family members. Thursday is our Christmas party. We are not exchanging gifts but bringing gifts for soldiers instead. Mrs. Hunt is in charge of delivering the care packages. We are writing letters for the soldiers today. On Friday, school will be dismissed at 11:30. We will eat brunch in the room and enjoy our traditional sing-along afterwards. The children may wear pajamas on Friday IF they bring $1.00 for our Relay for Life team.
We are still talking about rocks, etc. in Science class. Sorry about the schedule mix-up last week. I had to travel to Pike County in the middle of the week due to a death in my family. Also,I had completely forgotten about Junior Achievement (It was awesome!! The presenter was great and the children were so inquisitive and well-behaved!).
Mon.-Review, catch-up, chart reading, no homework
Tues-weathering, study for vocab. test (new words: crust, mantle, outer core, inner core)
Wed.-vocab. test, rock stations, no homework
Thurs.-erosion, no homework
In Math this week, Mrs. Hunt will be giving a common assessment on Tuesday so study those math facts. Mrs. Murdock is teaching Christmas legends and traditions during Reading class. We will be working on Christmas traditions during our Social Studies and enrichment time as well.
Have a WONDERFUL break with your children. All of my babies are grown up, so feel blessed when that little one climbs into your lap over the holidays. I'd like to have a little one in my lap again. Merry Christmas and a happy New Year!

What a rainy Monday! I'm glad the kids had some extra time to sleep this morning. It was perfect sleeping weather. We had the opportunity to work today on upcoming units. It was good to brainstorm with other science teachers. They had such good ideas. I found some new websites today with interactive games from Ms. Wilhoit. Mrs. Hill shared some of her rock activities. I got lots of notebooking ideas from Mrs. Furnish. I brought all those ideas back to Southside and planned for the next two weeks. I am ready!!!
Mon.-teacher work day
Tues.-layers of the earth, no homework
Wed.-soil, no homework
Thurs.-rocks, homework: study for vocab. quiz (new words: crust, mantle, core, also, children should know the uses of soil and rock)
Fri.- vocab quiz, graphing, earth stations, science RTI
Mrs. Hunt will continue with multiplication. They should take their common assessment before Christmas. ALL children should know their math facts. Keep practicing!
Mrs. Murdock will be pulling together several sources this week to come up with a common theme. This will be a new experience for the children but they will get lots of practice at school.
We will be taking a break from Ky. history during our Social Studies time to spend on Christmas traditions.
Have a great week!

I hope everyone had a great Thanksgiving break. I have a new member to my family, a daughter-in-law, as of October 16th. She went with us to Tennessee where my husband's family lives now. It was a treat getting to know her better. The children had many stories to tell me today. It was good to see their smiling faces.
This next month is usually one with many interruptions so please be patient with us if we get off schedule. Keep checking the agenda each day. They will always be up to date.
We officially ended life science today. We did a quick review and moved on to earth science.
Mon.-life science review, Science Court (living/once living/nonliving), group #2 finish front side of worksheet, other groups no homework
Tues.-Science Court continued, no homework
Wed.-fossils, study for quiz tomorrow
Thurs.-vocab quiz (same test but 5 new questions, new words: living, once living, nonliving)
Fri.-water
Mrs. Hunt is still covering multiplication in Math class and Mrs. Murdock continues to target comprehension in Reading. We have made it through to the time when Kentucky finally becomes a state. We are working hard on time lines and trying to remember historical Kentucky figures. Our enrichment groups will begin working again this week.
Thanks for the support at home. Remember to make sure they are dressing appropriately. If it is above freezing, we will go outside.Have a great week!

We are finally coming to the end of our animal project. The children have really enjoyed working on the posters. They look awesome! I am so proud of them. Along with the poster, they have typed an informational piece that consists of 4 paragraphs and a "Cool Facts" section. They have learned how to put text features into this piece such as titles, headings, pictures, and captions. We have covered 22 writing targets while we have solidified Science content. After our poster presentations, we will have covered 18 more Reading targets. WOW! We've been busy! I had my doubts about spending 3 weeks on this project but after grading their animal common assessment, I am glad we did. Our goal for our score is always 100. Our last common assessment score was 109. Our score for this one was 121 and I was away at a Science meeting when they completed it. It has been crazy in my room over these last three weeks but there has been lots of learning going on! They will present their posters to their classmates on Friday and Monday in class. They will be in the cafeteria on Tuesday. Feel free to drop by and take a look. We will be there 9:30 to 10:30. Several posters will go to the public library afterwards. Check your child's weekly review sheet each Friday. I will let you know when it is their turn. You may pick up the poster from the library and take it home. Since we have 61 children, it will take quite a while to get them all displayed, so be patient. Thanks for all the support you've given them at home. They have come in with terrific pictures!
Monday-posters, no homework
Tuesday-common assessment, no homework
Wednesday-posters, no homework
Thursday-practice presentations with rubric, no homework
Friday-DEA testing, begin presentations
Monday-presentations
Tuesday-display in cafeteria
Remember we will not have another vocab. test until after Thanksgiving. If your child is behind on their project, they will bring work home to catch them up.
Mrs. Hunt is still working on multiplication in Math so keep going over those facts! Mrs. Murdock will be doing seasonal poetry this week. The children always enjoy this. We are studying the Revolutionary War in Social Studies on Mondays and Thursdays. The other afternoons are our enrichment classes. We work really hard to meet the needs of all the children.
Have a GREAT Thanksgiving break!!!
