We will be doing a unit on Summer Safety. Students will not have a spelling test this week. We will continue to review all skills learned throughout the year in Reading, Math, and Language.

Students will get to see our Drama Club’s production of Alice in Wonderland on Tuesday, May 17.

Our Field Day is May 18. Please apply sunscreen to your child. We will be outside most of the day. Cross fingers it does not rain.

This week is testing week for the older students. In order for primary kids to understand the importance of this week, we will also be testing this week. We will take our final Reading and Math Common Assessments. We will also take our End-of-Year reading test that goes with our series. We will take a language test and our End-of-Year math test.

We won’t have any homework for the rest of the year!!

This week our story will be the biography Ben Franklin and His First Kite.

We will be working on prefixes un-, re-, and long vowel pattern o(st), o(od), i(nd), i(ld)

We will be learning about vowels aw au (as in saw, auto). We will review diphthongs oi, oy, suffixes and inflected endings.

This is the last week before Spring Break! We’re looking forward to having a fun, successful week.

Our story this week is Mole and the Baby Bird. This story is Animal Fantasy.

We will be learning about the diphthong ou/ou. We will talk about V/CV & VC/V (as in pi/lot, lem/on). We will review diphthong ow/ou and consonant+le.

For example, which of the following equations are true and which are false? 6=6, 7=8-1, 5=2=2+5, 4+1=5+2

We will also compose two-dimensional shapes or three-dimensional shapes to create a composite shape.

We will be learning about diphthong ow/ou and consonant + le. We will review suffixes ly and ful and vowels ew, ue, ui, oo that make the oo sound in moon.

March 12-15

Remember NO school on Friday, March 16

Please be aware that homework has increased. Students will now have a weekly Spelling Menu to complete. This will come home on Monday and needs to be returned along with the activities completed on Friday. Students will be required to do activities totaling 10 points.

Students will also have a daily fact sheet come home. This might be simple one digit addition or subtraction or two digit addition or subtraction. First graders are not required to learn how to regroup (borrow/carry).

Students will also bring home their reading book on Thursday night so they can read their story. Please be sure to return the book on Friday.

Our story this week is Peter’s Chair. We will be learning about compound words and words with the vowels ew, ue, ui.

We will review long i spelled ie, igh, inflected endings, and possessives.

Our amazing words this week are: collector, flourish, jealous, porridge, relatives, secret, seriousness, sibling. Students need to be familiar with these words and know their meanings.

I’m so thankful that everyone stayed safe over the weekend. Please continue to pray for those communities that have been effected by the storms.

I’m also thankful that most of our classmates are back to school after suffering from flu, strep, and stomach bugs. Please remind your child to wash hands often to keep sickness down.

Midterm ends Friday, March 9. Report cards go home district-wide March 19.

Our story this week is the realistic fiction story The Lady in the Moon.
We will be learning about long i spelled ie, igh. We will also work on beginning sounds kn/n/, and wr/r/.

We will review long e and long a, inflected endings, er and est endings, and possessives.

Our amazing words this week are: delightful, errand, festive, fiesta, memory, ordinary, refreshments, symbol. Students need to be familiar with these words and know their meanings.

In Language we will continue to work on types of sentences and their end marks as well as remembering that all sentences begin with capital letters. Homophones (words that sound the same, but have different spellings and meanings) will be introduced.

In Math we will continue to work on mentally adding and subtracting 10 from a number. We will learn about the fractions 1/2, 1/3, 1/4 by cutting shapes into these fractional parts. We will learn what a written fraction looks like and that a fraction is part of a whole.
