The Periodic Table

This week we began study of the Periodic Table. Students should be studying flashcards of the element names and symbols. We will be adding flashcards a little at a time.

In Lab class, we are familiarizing ourselves with the anatomy of a frog before we perform the actual dissection. Students will use the link below to complete virtual dissections. The “Netfrog Worksheet” must be completed before beginning actual dissection next week.

FOR CLASSES ON THURSDAY, 01-12-12

THIRD HOUR – Work on your research for your Science Project. The research should involve all of the vocabulary, theories, concepts and background information that an audience needs to understand your project. You will need to read from your research during your oral presentation the last few weeks of school.

This research should be typed, double-spaced. There is no minimum/ maximum words, but it needs to completely cover your chosen topic and related material.  I will be asking you questions after your presentation and you will have to answer them appropriately to earn credit. You will also need a bibliography of sites you used at the end of your paper.

While searching for information today, you will be able to surf the net at will. Remember, however, that if you are on a non-science site, clicking on pop-ups or cannot justify to me why you are on a particular site, you will be kicked out of the computer lab for the rest of the 9 weeks.

FIFTH, SIXTH AND SEVENTH – You will begin work on CH7, Plate Tectonics Virtual Lab today. Please go to the following website;

http://glencoe.mcgraw-hill.com/sites/0078600529/student_view0/unit3/chapter7/virtual_lab.html

Remember that the questions must be answered in an 8th grade manner on a separate sheet of notebook paper.

Note that this is the only site/ page that should appear on your computer screen. If you leave this site, you will be kicked out of the computer lab for the rest of the 9 weeks.

On Friday (01-06) there will be a reading counts test over "The Dead & The Gone" as well as the title and real-world problem for your Science Project.

FIFTH, SIXTH AND SEVENTH HOUR SCIENCE CLASSES -  PLEASE REMEMBER THERE IS A WELCOME WORK QUIZ THIS FRIDAY. THIS WEEK WE WILL LEARN HOW TO TAKE INDEPENDENT NOTES FROM THE TEXTBOOK. WE ARE BEGINNING PLATE TECTONICS, CH7.

For Science Classes, 12-12 and 12-13

December 12th, 2011
1. During the first 1/2 hour of class, you can complete whatever project you have saved on the school computer. I will unplug the printer after that 1/2 hour is up.

2. After that initial 1/2 hour, it will be time to study for you 9 weeks exam. It will cover the abiotic factors, natural cycles (water, carbon and nitrogen). The exam will be given on Wednesday.  Use the link below to access the review quiz on the textbook's website. You must try until you achieve 100% correct.

3. After completing the review quiz, perform the virtual lab about biomes on the link below.  There are handouts to be  completed along with  the lab. I'll stop the class and demonstrate how to perform the lab.

COMPUTER LAB – 12-08-11

biome-plant-animal-adaptations.ppt

Several classes did not finish this power point presentation on Tuesday (12-06). Please use this time in the computer lab to finish your power point notes BEFORE moving on to your biome menu items. Click on the link above to complete your adaptations notes. Here ya go, Zach!
——————————————————————————————-

Now that you have finished your adaptations notes from the power point presentation, you can move on to the menu items. Here are some websites you can use to supplement/ create your menu items. Click on the link below;

biome-websites.doc

Remember that you may not use all of the biomes listed on the above sites. There are many sub-groupings of biomes. Research only those that we are learning;
1. tundra
2. taiga (boreal or coniferous are synonyms)
3. temperate deciduous forest
4. temperate rain forest
5. tropical rain forest
6. grasslands (prairie, steppe, savannah are types of grasslands)
7. desert (only 1 "s" – dessert = treat/ food)

Remember too that you cannot copy and paste text and call it your own. That is plagiarizing. That is cheating. You can put research into your own words. That is called learning.
