System of Equations: By Graphing and by using the Elimination Method

4-23 Monday Students will use their knowledge of graphing equations to Solve a System of Two Equations to find their point of intersection on a graph.
EX. Students will be given two equations 2x+y=13 and 3x-y=7 and find where they intersect or come together on a graph.
By graphing these two equations, students will find their point of intersection is at (4, 5).

4-24 Tuesday More practice with graphing equations and finding the point of intersection. Graphs with exactly the same slope are not going to have an intersection because they are Parallel.

BIG IDEA: Parallel lines have the same slope.

4-25 Wednesday
Students will use the Elimination Method also called the Addition Method to solve a System of Equations

Students will add two equations to try and eliminate one variable. By eliminating one variable, students will be able to solve for the other variable and plug the number into one equation to find the solution to the equations.

Example: 2x +y = 13
+3x -y= 7
Add together
2x+3x= 5x
and
y+-y=0
Add together
13+7=20

2x + y = 13
+3x – y = 7

5x = 20
Divide both sides by 5 to get x by itself
x = 4

Plug x=4 into one of the equations: I will choose the top equation
2 x + y = 13
2 (4) + y = 13
8 + y = 13
Subtract 8 from both sides
y=13-8
y=5
The solution that satisfies both equations is (4,5). (4,5) is the point of intersection for the two equations 2x +y = 13 and 3x -y= 7

We are counting down to testing! 3 weeks remaining until the students take the KPREP.
Testing begins May 7th and will continue until May 11th.

This week, students will review how to write equations to represent real world situations.

4-16-2012 Monday
In class, students will be given Equations in Standard Form
Ax +By= C and asked to put the same equation in slope intercept form y= mx + b

Writing equations in Slope-Intercept form.

Practice Finding the Rate of Change in a table, graph, and equation.
Practice Finding the Initial Value in a table, graph, and equation.
Example from Today’s class work:
A water tank that holds 18 gallons leaks two gallons of water every minute. Determine the rate of change and the initial value of the situation and use them to write an equation. Then graph the relationship.
y=-2x+18

The rate is decreasing 2 gallons each minute.
so -2 is the slope
18 is the initial amount at the beginning.

NO HOMEWORK.

Today’s example: A car salesperson earns $25,000 per year, plus $400 per car sold.
The equation is y=400x +25,000
400 is the rate
25,000 is the initial value.

Begin Systems of Equations
Bill has an offer to work for Car Town Chevy. He will earn 30,000 each year plus $200 per car sold.
He currently works for Truckville Ford. He earns $25,000 each year plus $400 per car sold.

How many cars must Bill sale to make the same amount of money for both Car Town Chevy and Truckville Ford?
Answer:
25 cars and he would make $35,000 for either company!

where x is the number of cars sold
and y is the amount of money Bill will make

y=200x+30,000
y=400x+25,000
set both equations equal to each other
400x+25,000 = 200x+30,000
400x-200x= 30,000 – 25,000
200x=5,000
divide both sides by 200
x=25

Determine if the given relation is function or not.

Is this a function or not?
We need to ask ourselves, does every input correspond with EXACTLY ONE output? In this case, the answer is yes. 5 only goes with 10, 10 only goes with 10, and 15 only goes with 10.

Note that a relation can still be a function if an output value associates with more than one input value as shown in this example. But again, it would be a no no the other way around, where an input value corresponds to two or more output values.

So, this relation would be an example of a function.

Example: Determine if the given relation is function or not.
{(1, 2), (1, -2), (2, 3), (3, 4)}

Is this a function or not?
We need to ask ourselves, does every input correspond with EXACTLY ONE output? In this case, the answer is no. The input value of 1 goes with two output values, 2 and -2. It only takes one input value to associate with more than one output value to be invalid as a function.

So, this relation IS NOT a function.

Find the domain and range for the set of values.
{(1, 2), (1, -2), (2, 3), (3, 4)}

Domain
We need to find the set of all input values. In terms of ordered pairs, that correlates with the first component of each one. So, what do you get for the domain?

If you got {1, 2, 3}, you are correct!

Note that if any value repeats, we only need to list it one time.

Range
We need to find the set of all output values. In terms of ordered pairs, that correlates with the second component of each one. So, what do you get for the range?

If you got {2, -2, 3, 4}, you are absolutely right!

March Madness Begins

As March is quickly passing, my anxiety level begins to accelerate. No, this is not a math question but could be …….(more about that in future blogs)

This week in Math students are exploring the idea of functions. Specifically we are focusing on linear functions. Linear Functions are tables, graphs, and equations that increase by a constant amount or decrease by a constant amount.

You can have two ways of showing a function.
y= or f(x) which is read as f of x.

Here is an example of this weeks activities with functions:
Students will be asked
8x-6=2x when is this equation false?
Examples of false values for x
when x=2 the equation does not work..
8(2) – 6 = 2 (2)
16-6=4
10 does not equal 4
so when x=2 8x-6=2x does not work.
another way to write that is f(2) does not equal 8x-6=2x
There are many other values of x that will not work for this equation.

Students will the be asked “when is the equation 8x-6=2x TRUE?”
When students look for the true solution for the equation they may use any strategy or method that they have learned to solve for x.

Answer: when x=1 the equation is true.
Here is why
8(1)-6 = 2(1)
8-6=2
2=2
YEAH! We found the solution.

How many solutions does the equation 8x-6=2x have?
It has only one. How do you know?
We have learned it is a linear function and as a result it will only have one solution.

We will focus on these types of questions this week.
Given an equation what values of x make the equation true?
Given an equation is the equation always true, sometimes true, or never true?
Given an equation how many solutions will it have? How do you Know?

These are some of the MAIN ideas from this week.

End of the Third Nine Weeks

Sending up prayers on behalf of the Victims of Friday’s terrible storms. We are collecting used/ new totes to take to West Liberty.
We are collecting money for victims of the terrible Tornadoes that ripped through Eastern Kentucky.

The end of the Third Nine weeks is upon us. This week is going to be very busy with end of the nine weeks common assessments.
