We are winding down this unit on Radicals. In an effort to prepare the Freshman for their next year, I am really focusing them on “learning to learn”. Through the remainder of this school year, we will be challenging the students to take improved notes in class and to utilize their books to navigate throught the homework. Additionally, homework needs to be completed 3 out of 4 nights per week. If a student has 2 missing homework assignments ( which is a 50% grade for the week), and fails to make them up by Friday, they may be assigned a Friday school. Time is allowed in class to either begin and/or usually complete their homework. Additionally, I am available each morning for free tutoring.

We are wrapping up the 3rd 9 weeks at Harrison County High School. Many students are missing tests and/or quizzes. These students may make up these assessments, but they need to schedule time before or after class, or during club day. We really can not afford to take class time for making up a day they have already missed. I will be entering “0″ for any outstanding assessment grade this week until they retake the assessment. Obviously, there is no penalty for delay on an assignment.

This week we are studying Chapter 9.
We are also conducting out Discovery test. This is the second Discovery test to verify progress in Algebraic concepts.

Unfortunately, some students had below a 55% for the first half of the school year. I have let the students know, that with such a grade, it will be extremely difficult to pass for the year. In other words, they will fail Algebra 1 and have to retake the course in the 2012/2013 academic year. I went on to let the students know that if they fail the first test of the second semester, it would be almost impossible to pass Algebra 1. Some students are in serious academic situation in Alg. 1. I am available for tutoring in the mornings and usually in the afternoon. All by appointment. Feel free to contact me if you have any questions. Letters will be going home shortly if your child is at risk to fail. You can always keep track of their progress on Infinite Campus.

Our first week is over for the second half of the school year. Several students have been assigned Friday school because they did not complete/attempt their homework. (If a student misses 3 homework assignment in one week, they will be assigned Friday school) All homework can be turned in late and they will receive full credit. Once the test on that material is taken, the homework can no longer be turned in.
We have a unit test this Friday. It will be over linear inequalities and absolute values.
