Storm Safety….

May 25th, 2011

With all the severe weather we've had here and around us, I thought I would post some safety tips.

Tornado Safety Tips for Kids

If a tornado warning is declared, you may be scared and confused. Where should you go? What should you do? Being in a tornado can be scary, but you can keep yourself as safe as possible by following these tornado safety tips.

  1. Before a Tornado

    • Listen to the radio or watch television to keep updated on the weather. If there is a tornado watch, it means that scientists are predicting that there might be a tornado. If there is a tornado warning, it means that a tornado has actually been spotted. Make sure you know the difference.

    During a Tornado–Inside

    • If you are indoors during a tornado, walk immediately to the lowest floor of the building, such as a basement or cellar. If the building does not have a basement or cellar, go into a room without any windows, such as a closet or bathroom. Stay away from windows, crawl under a heavy piece of furniture, and cover yourself with a blanket or rug. If you are in school, follow your teacher's instructions.

    During a Tornado–Outside

    • If you are outside when a tornado strikes, do not try to run from it. Instead, try to go inside the closest building. If there are no buildings nearby, lie down in a ditch or another low area. Cover your head with your arms to protect it from objects that might get thrown by the tornado.

    After a Tornado

    • After a tornado strikes, be careful. Stay away from broken glass or downed power lines.

Easter Fun Facts……….

Why Different Dates for Easter???

The date of the Easter observance has always been a matter of great debate especially as there are no sufficient records of the exact date of Jesus' resurrection. The confusion increased when Christianity was split between the Western Church (Roman Catholic and Protestant) and Eastern Church (Greek and Russian Orthodox). Naturally, the dates of observance of many a festival came under serious consideration and Easter was no exception. The Eastern Church wanted to observe Easter on a weekday as early Christians observed Passover every year on the 14th of Nisan, the month based on the lunar calendar. But, the Western Church wanted that Easter should always be a Sunday regardless of the date.

The Roman Emperor Constantine tried to put an end to this problem in 325 A.D. and called the Council of Nicaea to try and fix a definitive date for Easter. The council decided that Easter should fall on Sunday following the first full moon after the vernal equinox. With the assistance of the Alexandrians, experts in astronomical calculations, it set March 21 as the perfect date for equinox.

Henceforth, Easter has always been celebrated on the first Sunday following the first full moon after the vernal equinox. Both Western Churches (Roman Catholic and Protestant) and Eastern Churches (Greek and Russian Orthodox) conform to this tradition even though there exists a gap of about five weeks between the date of the two Easter celebrations.

The main reason for this disparity lies in the fact that the Western Church follows the old Julian calendar while the Orthodox Church abides by the Gregorian calendar. Orginally both churches fixed their activities according to the Julian calendar but things changed when the Eastern Orthodox Church abandoned the Julian Calendar in favor of the Gregorian calendar. As a result, Catholic (and eventually Protestant) churches needed to convert the originally Julian-based date of Easter into a Gregorian date.

The difference between the Western and the Orthodox observance of Easter also depends on the way both churches calculate the date of the vernal equinox. The Western Church abides by the ecclesiastical full moon. It holds 21st March as the steady date for the vernal equinox and determines the full moon using ecclesiastical calculations. But the Eastern Church sets its celebration according to the astronomical full moon. It sets the date for Easter Sunday based on their astronomical calculations of the full moon and the equinox along the meridian of Jerusalem.

Thus an exact date of Easter Sunday celebrations is impossible even though it always falls sometime between March 22 and April 25.

Help Your Child Ace His Next Spelling Test

by Peggy Gisler, Ed.S. and Marge Eberts, Ed.S.

Is your child quizzed on weekly spelling words? Help him prepare with these tips.

Give your child a pre-test. When your child brings home his list of spelling words, sit him down with a pencil and paper for a practice quiz. Don't have him copy the words or sentences. Children learn how to spell words by visualizing them in their minds, not by copying them. Simply, say each word in a sentence out loud for your child to write down. Try to give the pre-test in exactly the same way the teacher would give the actual test. Have your son correct the pre-test. He should study only the words he has misspelled.

How your child will learn to spell the words he's spelled incorrectly on his pre-test:

1) Have him say the word while looking at it.

2) Tell him to close his eyes, try to see the word, and then spell the word out loud.

3) Have him look at the written word to see if he's spelled it out loud correctly.

4) Ask him to look at the word, then cover the word and have him write it.

5) Finally, your child should check to see if he's written the word correctly. If the word is misspelled, all four steps should be repeated before moving on to the next word.

Once your child has learned to use this technique, he will be able to study his spelling words independently. On the night before the test, give him a final test of all the words.
