The temperature sure has dropped!  I love this type of weather.  Fall is my favorite time of the year.  This is a good time to let parents know of our fifth grade recess weather procedure.  If the high temperature for the day is going to be below 50 degrees, students will be required to wear jackets outside during recess.  We have a few extra jackets/coats in our closets if a student does not wear one to school.  Hoodies and sweatshirts do not count.

Next Friday, September 23rd is our Grandparent Day for 5th grade.

We have a few items for our class UK basket, but we need more.  Our fall festival is two weeks from tomorrow!!!  I will be sending a note home next week seeking volunteers for our class booth.

Have a terrific weekend with your family!

I am sooooo excited about this school year!  I love my lil' darlin's!!!  This is going to be an extraordinary year, I just know it.  I love my job, and I love my students.  They are very unique, and they all get along very well.

This is just a reminder…there is no school next Monday, September 5th.  Therefore, our Spelling list will be short by three words due to the four day school week.  We will take our Spelling Pre-test on Thursday of next week, not Wednesday.

So far this year, we have been diving headlong into our Geography unit.  We will be taking our final assessment on Geography next Friday, September 9th.

Have a "cool" Labor Day weekend!  Enjoy it with the ones you love!

Well, spring break is now just about overSurprised.  Now it's time to get back to our routine at Eastside.  I had an enjoyable week with my family and I hope all of my students did too.  I am excited about these next two months in fifth grade.  We have so much to cover before our KCCT Assessments, but we'll get it done.

What a weekend for the UK basketball team!  I am pumped about coming to school to see our rowdy group of Wildcat fans and hear their commentaries on the game.  UK will play UConn next Saturday at 8:48p.m. "When" they win, they will play in the championship game against the Butler Bulldogs(hopefully).  I like that team a bunch!  That game will take place a week from Monday at approximately 9:00.  Bummer, that's a school night.  Parents, that's your call on how late you'll let your children stay up that night.  But we've got to win Saturday first!

If your child hasn't sang/rapped a little song about Jamestown this week, make sure you have them do so!!!  We had so much fun with it.  Yes, we studied about early British colonies here in America this week: Jamestown, Plymouth, Massachusetts Bay, and even the one that disappeared, Roanoke(ask your child their opinion of what happened to them).  Next week, we will discuss the 13 colonies.

In Math, Mrs. Pawley and Ms. Lair have discussed measurement this week.

In Reading, Mrs. Newcomb covered various aspects of core content: theme, articles, hyperlinks, etc.

In English, we reviewed verb usage in multiple choice formats.

In Science, we are talking about weather and the water cycle.

We will have 4-H on Tuesday, March 8th.

Have a superb weekend!

Our 5th grade students are SOOO appreciative of the warmer weather we've experienced this week!  They definitely do not like our below 50 degree coat rule. :)

This was a busy week…and hey, it was a full five day school week.

In Math this week, Mrs. Pawley covered the customary and metric systems.

In Reading, Mrs. Newcomb discussed problems vs. solutions as well as root words and affixes.

In Social Studies, we concluded our Economics unit with an assessment on Friday.  We will begin covering exploration in the 1400s and 1500s next week.

In Science, we have gotten our toes wet into weather.

In Writing/English, we concluded our Paul Revere DAR Essays.

Have an unbelievable weekend with your family!

We have doing our best to study economics in between all of our snow days!!!  We use this video series, "Econ and Me," to supplement our studies.  It is a little dorky and out of date, but the students love it, and it really coincides with our core content.  Beginning this week, we will start to have several open responses pertaining to various economic concepts: supply and demand, consumer and producer, and specialization.

If we do not miss any days of school, this Friday, February 11th will be our 100th day of school!

We will have our Valentine's Day Party on Monday, February 14th.  A note went home last Friday with details.

Have a great week!

Today, we discussed the Civil Rights Movement and the importance of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. to our country's history.  We did a little CSI on Rosa Park and her refusal to give up her seat in the "colored" section of the bus in Montgomery.  Many times, we hear that she didn't give up her seat in the white section.  She actually was seated in the correct seat.  However, Montgomery, Alabama had a city ordinance that said if a bus was crowded and the white section was full, then the next row in the colored section must get up and move back if another white person came aboard.  That's what happened.  A white gentleman came on the bus and stood up holding the handrail.  It was the bus driver that ordered Rosa to move back.  Of course, she refused and was arrested, but we talked about the misconception that many people have of this historic event.

Check out the "I Have a Dream" link listed on the left.  It is a fun way to read Dr. King's speech!

Just to let you know, we will be using the same Spelling list and definitions next week.  Our two days in school did not warrant a test this week.

Have a superb weekend!
