This will be my last post, as I am retiring as principal. I am happy to announce that Eastside's new principal will be BJ Maggard, a long-time Harrison County (and Eastside) educator. I want to thank you for your support of our educational mission here at Eastside, and I want to encourage you to continue to offer your time and talent to the outstanding staff here, so that progress in serving your children can continue to be made. I very much appreciate the opportunity I've had to serve the Eastside students and community; thanks for your trust and your active commitment to our children's education.

Our KCCT testing has been progressing very well, with our third through fifth grade students working diligently on demonstrating their deep knowledge through responses to multiple-choice and open response questions. Our primary students have done their part in supporting the testers' efforts through their making cards, sending snacks, and other supportive measures.

We'd like to give you a reminder that our SBDM Council election will be held this Monday, May 17, from 7:30 AM – 5 PM. Two parent representatives will be chosen for the 2010-2012 biennium in this election.

We held our annual Testing Pep Rally today, and got in the testing mood, for sure! We want students to perform at their best and to have the idea that they ARE prepared, thanks to their hard work all year. You can help your child be ready to succeed by simply offering encouragement and communicating your confidence in her/him. Also, you can reinforce the notion of preparation through getting plenty of rest and remaining focused on giving the best effort possible.

We will be sending out nomination forms for parents to be a part of the school's School-Based Decision-Making (SBDM) Council for the upcoming 2-year cycle (this includes the 2010-11 school year and the 2011-12 school year). The Council (which includes 2 parent representatives, 3 teachers, and the principal), collectively has a major impact the success of the school through its decisions made concerning budgeting, staffing configurations, and curricula and related matters. The Council also assists the principal through consultation in the hiring of teaching and related support personnel. Please carefully consider being a part of the Council for the upcoming 2-year term.

I want to compliment the students upon their return from spring break. There is a renewed spirit of cooperation and eagerness to learn, which is greatly appreciated. I also want to let you know that I have made the very difficult decision to submit my retirement effective at the end of this June. I know that our staff will carry on our mission to provide outstanding educational opportunities to every student and that all of us at Eastside Elementary will continue to serve Harrison County in an open, responsible, and cooperative manner.

As our students prepare for a well-earned spring, break, please encourage them to continue their learning throughout the week. They may read and write, help with chores around the house, play games with friends and family, observe nature, perform random acts of kindness, or get involved in hundreds of other activities. Even watching TV can be a learning experience. Ask your child to talk with you about a program they have watched – discussing and explaining such questions as "Who were the characters? What problems did they face? How did they solves the problems?" or "What would you have done in their place?" can be a very entertaining, fulfilling, and educational opportunity!

I'd like to congratulate our Quick Recall team for its recent success during this inaugural Harrison County Schools' quick recall season. During the season, each of the 4 elementaries in the district competed against one another in a home and home schedule, a total of 6 matches per school. In that phase, Eastside's team had a 6-0 record. Then, on Saturday, March 13, a double elimination tournament was held. Our team won the tournament, going undefeated.

Such results reflect the dedication and strong efforts by our students, as well as the coaches who have helped prepare the team members for success. I thank all of the parents who have allowed us to have the opportunity to coach their children in this academic endeavor, and I look forward to our team's March 20 regional Governor's Cup competition against schools from nearby counties.

Just a reminder that the upcoming Monday, February 15 (Presidents' Day), will be a regular school day. Our district has decided on this change in response to the numerous days we have already missed due to weather/illness conditions, with the possibility of more inclement weather ahead. In case we have further off-days due to the weather, check out our teachers' blogs for links to websites which your child might enjoy!
