REMINDER: We will be exchanging cards on MONDAY, February 13, 2012. Students may bring snacks to share.
We have completed math lessons on measurment and capacity. We have also talked about line graphs, bar graphs, and pictographs. We have gathered information by using tally marks.
Students have talked about story sequence. In grammar, we have worked with pronouns. A pronoun takes the place of a noun.
Students have also written letters to Senator Stein and Representative McKee persuading them to fund the Cabinet of Health and Safety and the Family and Children’s Council so that we can keep our Family Resource Center. The students have learned how many things that they provide services for and how they are directly effected by these services.

We are working on measuring length and capacity! Students will be tested on these areas in the next few days.
Please keep reviewing multiplication with your students. As a class, we seem to be struggling.

The "How To" projects that we have had so far have been GREAT! There has been quite a variety. It has been very evident that each student has practiced at home. I have videoed the presentations. I am going to try to get a DVD made for the entire class, but I'm not very skilled so it may be a while to get it "released!'
Please remember that this is an assigment for their communication portfolio.
Please remind your student to read the weekly story again on Thursday evening. Our scores on reading assessments have not been good overall. Not only are the students given that reading as an assignment, but they are also allowed to use their book during the assessment. I have been amazed that after hearing the instructions, they are not choosing to look in their book. We also discuss the assessment content during the week, so the questions should be familiar.
During the winter, we will try to have recess outdoors if the weather permits. Please make sure your student wears proper outerwear. I have had a few that have not been wearing coats. They say they get in the car through the garage and forget to wear them. I truly can see how it happens, but I hate to have the kids stay in because one student is not wearing a coat.

The students will be preparing and presenting the written articles on their "How to" projects next week. We will talk more about them prior to the date they are due, but right now, January 20th is our target for all presentations. Remember they may bring props, posters, pictures, and whatever else they would like to bring but at this time we can not allow students to bring in live animals.
We have a student teacher working with us now!
Ms. Ellis will be with us for a total of eight weeks. She will be teaching various lessons as she completes her responsibilities. We are working close together to make sure that the lessons express our current state standards. Before she leaves our classroom, she will have a solo week. This means she will be in charge for a whole week by planning, preparing and teaching. In case your students don't quite get the message across, she will have a solo week, but I will be in attendance and providing assistance during the week.
We will have our assessment on Seven Spools of Thread from our reading book when we return on Tuesday. We will also have our written spelling test from Seven Spools of Thread on Tuesday also.

Report cards were sent home today. Please keep the report card and sign and return the envelope to school on Monday. Also, the students received new folders for the second semester today. Please remove the papers, sign and date the folder, and return it on Monday too. When students don't return the folders early in the week, it is harder to keep up with their new papers as I check and file them. Returning the folders helps the students accept responsibilty and keeps us all better organized.
Have a great weekend!

Happy New Year!
The snow has already played with our schedule. The students and I discussed just yesterday that if it did snow, how we would do our spelling tests. If we only miss one or two days during the week, the spelling test will still remain on schedule. If we should miss a Friday, please be prepared for the test on the following school day. If we miss more than two days during the week, then we will reschedule if we need to do so.
I have noticed that several students are not taking their reading books home to read their assignments. During the second semseter we will be moving quite rapidly. Students need to read to be ready for there assessments. Poor assessments affect their grade averages so please encourage your students to follow the directions. They should have reading assignments Monday through Thursday.

This week is filled with so many activities. Remember that if your child is bringing a donation for the Subway food pantry collection, then I must be aware of it in order to record the class credit as we try to earn a cookie party!
Our Party is 1:30 on Thursday, December 15, 2011. Please let Mrs. Funkhouser or myself know if you would like to send something. There are not 21 students in our classroom. You may send a note and I will make sure Mrs. Funkhouser gets it that day.

Wow! Didn't the kids do a great job last night? I was very proud of them.
Once again, we have been challenged to participate in a can drive. Please see the information below, but remember that participation is not mandatory.
Subway is doing a can drive for the holidays, through the elementary schools. Please mention it to your students, but we are not going to send any paperwork home. I will put a notice in your mailbox, but it is not necessary to copy it.
Please keep track of the number of items you collect because the winning school will receive a coupon (for every student) for a FREE subway kid's meal and the individual class that collects the most will win a cookie party. Please turn in your number of items to the office by next Thursday, December 15th.
All donated items will be picked up on December 15th in the afternoon.
Thanks for your participation in this can drive.
