Tobacco-Free Campus

PURPOSE

To provide a safe and healthy environment for all people who work on the Harrison County School District (HCSD) campus or use Harrison County School District services by prohibiting tobacco use in or on all Harrison County School District properties.

  • Provides positive role modeling by adult employees and visitors
    Reduces children's observation of tobacco use and takes a firm stand against it.
    Supports prevention messages delivered in classrooms.
    Provides safe environments for students by reducing their exposure to secondhand smoke.
    Complies with federal legislation prohibiting smoking in school buildings.

POLICY

Tobacco use will be prohibited in any Harrison County School District building, on Harrison County Schools’ grounds and property, including vehicles owned by Harrison County Schools. Harrison County School District will be tobacco free by July 1, 2011 for Harrison County Schools’ employees and students.

PROCEDURE

This policy applies to everyone who has reason to be on or in
properties owned or incorporated within HCSD.

All HCSD employees are required to abstain from tobacco use on
their shifts and when on or in HCSD property.

Job applicants and contract workers will be informed of the
tobacco-free policy prior to beginning work with Harrison County Schools.

Appropriate signage and/or notices will be posted at the entrance
to HCSD properties and buildings.

Tobacco and tobacco-related supplies shall not be sold or
distributed on the HCSD grounds or within any HCSD building.

RESPONSIBILITY FOR ENFORCEMENT

All Harrison County Schools’ employees are responsible for enforcement of this policy.

Any colleague, family member, or visitor violating this policy will be asked by the discovering employee or contractor to immediately discontinue use of the tobacco product.

Any administrator who receives a complaint regarding violation of this policy will investigate and resolve the issue as soon as possible.

ENFORCEMENT ACTIONS

1. Employees who violate this policy will be subject to

a. 1st offense - Written warning that does not go in the employee’s permanent personnel file

b. 2nd offense - Mandatory attendance to smoking cessation training

c. 3rd offense – Written warning that goes in employee’s permanent personnel file

2. Visitors who violate this policy will be asked to discontinue use of tobacco products or immediately leave HCSD properties.
